Oxford is a historic small town located in Sumner County, Kansas on Highway 160 with a population of approximately 1,000 residents. Oxford has been named a TREE CITY USA since 1992. The town site sits on the west bank of the Arkansas River. Cave Park is located on the east side of town, and offers a playground area for children, a covered shelter, and a public access, paved boat ramp to the Arkansas River.     101 S Sumner Demolition

    Once home to the Palace Theater the building that sits at 101 S Sumner St is set for demolition in the coming days and weeks.  Originally built as the Oxford Opera House in 1909 this building also served as a movie theater, automotive shop, and a restaurant throughout the years.  When it was the Palace theater it had 450 seats and air conditioning in the late 1930's. It had been vacant for several years after operating as the Opera House but T.H. Slothower did a complete remodel of the building to convert it into the theater.  The Palace Theater was in operation for 7 years from 1937-1944.  In 1969 it even had a pick-up station for dry cleaning ran by Mr. and Mrs. Gene Donley in colaboration with Beckwith Cleaners in Winfield. Throughout the years this building served Oxford in many different ways and its demolition will take a piece of Oxford History with it.
